How Wood Defender Sable Brown Compares to Other Colors

Sable Brown is the middle-of-the-road brown color offered by Wood Defender. There are options that are either darker or lighter if that is what you would prefer. Also, there are similar colors in the transparent stain line.

Sable Brown

Coffee Brown

Wood Defender has a similar color called coffee brown. This brown is a darker version of sable brown. Darker colors will tend to appear more sophisticated and high-end. The lighter browns lend themselves to a rustic or country style. If you want a more high-end look you may consider coffee brown as an alternative.

If you would like to go with a transparent stain so that you can see more wood grain, leatherwood would be a good option for you. It is a similar color in a transparent stain. Another darker alternative would be Oxford Brown.

Sable Brown is a Semi-Transparent Stain

Sable Brown is a Wood Defender semi-transparent stain. This means that the stain will offer good color coverage while still allowing a little of the wood grain to show through. This makes it a very versatile stain. It can be used on new fences because it will still highlight some of its natural beauty. It can also be used on older fences.

Older fences often have blemishes or imperfections. Maybe some pickets were replaced and look different than the rest of the fence, or the wood may have some staining from sprinklers. Using a semi-transparent stain is one way to cover up and mask some of these blemishes. A transparent stain would allow these problems in the wood to show through.

Semi-transparent stains also tend to last a little longer than the more translucent ones. This is because they use stronger pigments to achieve their color. These pigments are able to stand up to the elements better.

What Architectural Styles Go With Sable Brown?

As mentioned above, sable brown is a very adaptable color. Because it is a mid-tone brown it will not look too dark or too light in most settings. If you are concerned about another color appearing too dark, then sable brown is a good alternative.

This color has a slightly warm neutral feel. This means it will pair well with either warm or cool paint colors. This is a good feature because most fence stain colors will bring out warm tones that may clash with cool paint colors. Wood naturally has a warm appearance and this color will help neutralize it.

Sable brown fits very comfortably in the rustic, or country style. It will do fine in a modern style backyard also if the other landscaping helps bring out the modern vibe.

How Popular is Wood Defender Sable Brown?

Sable brown is on of the top selling colors for Wood Defender every year. It has seen a little dip in popularity as many homeowners are wanting to try out more modern fence stain colors.

The popularity of this color is due mostly to its versatility. Because it looks good in so many settings it will likely be a perpetual favorite.

  1. Hello I have a new cedar fence I order a couple samples from wood defender Cedar Tone and Leatherwood transparent. So my question is how much will the color lighten over the 90 day cure time?!

    • Hello Coret, Woood Defender does go through a color change after it’s initial application. It seems like it usually reaches it’s final appearance within a few weeks. It will lighten some and will go from a more vibrant look to a more subdued matte appearance. The color change is not too drastic though. The samples should give you a pretty good idea about the final appearance. Especially if you have the time to let the color sample sit for a week or two.
